District police chief Rakesh Aggarwal told IANS: “On a tip off, police have arrested four smugglers today (Monday) and recovered fake currency worth Rs.565,000 from them. One of them is from Nepal, one from Himachal Pradesh (Una town), and two are from Punjab (Gharshankar town).”

“They used to bring this money from Nepal and give Rs.25,000 for every one lakh to the main supplier. They would further give it to other small smugglers in India at Rs.65,000 for every one lakh,” he added.

“These fake currency notes are of fine quality and it’s difficult for the common man to tell the difference,” he added.

Aggarwal said that during interrogation, the miscreants had told police that the main supplier in Nepal procured these fake currency notes from Singapore and Pakistan.

“We have got many vital clues during the interrogation. In the next few days we are hoping to unearth more such smugglers active in the region and make more arrests,” Aggarwal said.

Chandigarh police had also arrested a widow from Amritsar town in this state Sunday and seized fake currency with the face value of Rs.480,000 from her possession.

However, Nawanshahr police said that it is too early to claim any link between these two arrests.
