Jammu : Authorities claimed they may have averted a “major” terror strike after Jammu and Kashmir Police arrested a youth near here Friday with explosives and other incriminating material on the eve of Independence Day.
Kuldip Raj alias Raju, a frequent visitor to Pakistan, was arrested from Kanachak, 20 km west of here, following a tip-off, Senior Superintendent of Police (Jammu) Manohar Singh told reporters.
“We have recovered one kilogram of RDX, detonators, two grenades and Indian currency worth Rs.20,000 and a Pakistani SIM card from him.
“We are looking for his associates. We believe he and his associates were tasked with carrying out some major terror act,” Singh said.
“Other details would be known only after Kuldip’s interrogation is completed,” he said.
Police have intensified checking and frisking on the roads and set up checkpoints across Jammu city and its suburbs.
Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand will lead Independence Day celebrations in this winter capital of the state Saturday.
