Kochi: The stabbing of a merchant in Mangalore has become a major setback to the ensuring of peace in the city where miscreants have been unleashing attacks on people. Ibrahim (30) was stabbed near the Central Market in the city, just opposite the police outpost, on Friday night by four unidentified persons. The seriously-injured man is undergoing treatment in a private hospital in the city.
Ibrahim was stabbed from behind as he was returning home on his motor bike from his vegetable shop. He was stopped by four strangers and stabbed with sharp weapons. The attackers escaped after stabbing. There are also reports that attempts were made to assault an auto rickshaw driver the same night rather late, but he managed to escape.
The incident occurred even as prohibitory orders have been imposed to control the attacks that have been going on since Monday. The police are reportedly not yet sure if the attacks are merely a law and order problem. Doubts arise as this is the fifth such stabbing incident in the city since Monday.
A peace committee meeting was convened by the district administration yesterday in the city. All participants called for peace and communal harmony in the meeting which witnessed serious discussions on the burqa controversy, prohibitory orders and the role of the media in covering sensitive issues. Mixed response arose in the different matters discussed. The Muslim leaders also expressed their concern at the night curfew which would bar night prayers in the month of Ramzan.
The night curfew has been imposed in the city yesterday for two days. The curfew would be in force from 8 pm to 6 am. The police have also reportedly intensified patrolling the city. The administration has ordered all shops, business establishments, restaurants etc to be closed at 8 pm. The police are also making preventive arrest of anti-socials.
