Baghdad : Top United Nations (UN) envoy to Iraq expressed his joy over the success of the Iraqi governorate councils’ elections.
Speaking in the Iraqi accent at a press conference Saturday evening, UN Secretary General’s Special Representative for Iraq Staffan de Mistura said the day of elections was a good day for democracy in Iraq and congratulated the Iraqis.
He praised the participation of a large number of voters in the elections which were held amid strong security measures.
Meanwhile, manager of the independent higher elections commission Faraj Al-Haideri said at the press conference that the initial results of the elections will be ready by the end of the week, pointing out that the announcement of the final results will take a few weeks because the commission will have to consider complaints and appeals before approving the results.
