London : A British and a French nuclear submarine collided in the Atlantic Ocean, a media report said Monday.
According to the report, both the submarines had nuclear warheads on board at the time of the accident.
The British HMS Vanguard and French Le Triomphant submarines are believed to have collided sometime between Feb 3 and 4, the MehrNews said on its website quoting a report.
Reacting to the incident, a senior British Navy official said the potential consequences of such a collision were “unthinkable”.
He said: “It’s very unlikely there would have been a nuclear explosion. But a radioactive leak was a possibility, which would have been a national disaster.”
Britain’s defence ministry refused to confirm the incident, saying it was against its policy to comment on submarine operations.
