Melbourne : India’s new tennis find Somdev Devvarman crashed out of Australian Open qualifiers Friday after losing to Poland’s Lukasz Kubot in the second round.
Somdev, ranked 154, went down fighting to Kubot 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.
The Indian’s stellar performance in the ATP Chennai Open where he reached the final had raised hopes of his qualifying for the year’s first Grand Slam starting Monday.
Somdev defeated compatriot Prakash Amritraj in the first qualifying round but Kubot proved a tough nut to crack.
Somdev, seeded 28th in the qualifiers, took the first set in just 37 minutes before the Polish No.1 fought back and won the match that lasted nearly three hours.
