Kolkata : Injudicious use of conventional energy resources has increased the intensity of natural disasters, a top physicist said here Friday.

“The intensity of all natural calamities has gone up because of man’s nature to randomly use conventional energy resources available around us,” Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics (NINP) director Bikash Sinha said at a seminar on environmental issues organised by the Bengal National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BNCCI).

“We’ve seen that the intensity of all natural disasters that are taking place around the globe has suddenly gone up in the recent days. The reason is that we’re not adopting alternative measures and still depending on the conventional energy resources.

“If we still continue to do this, it’ll destroy the essential equilibrium of our ecology, Sinha said, pointing out that the natural energy resources like coal, crude oil and gas will soon be finished in a few years.

“There’s a correlation between all the natural disasters that we are witnessing now,” he said.

Sinha also stressed upon the importance of nuclear energy where India can play a pivotal role.

He said that presently solar and nuclear energy are the two sustainable options India has to meet the future energy requirement.

“Nuclear energy is a must but it’s not all. I think the use of all forms of alternative energies – including solar, renewable energy from solid waste – should be jacked up,” Sinha, who also one of the advisors to the prime minister’s scientific committee.

“Nano technology could also be used for generating solar power and producing renewable energy from solid waste plants,” he said.
