A crime branch police officer said the land of about 300 square metres belongs to Makarba village panchayat on the outskirts of Ahmedabad where Jadeja is alleged to have built his house, six shops and a temple in 1996-97.

The Makarba village panchayat served a notice to Jadeja June 2 when policemen, investigating the case, asked panchayat officials to check land records and verify if Jadeja actually owned the land.

The police officer said Makarba panchayat members were also being questioned as to how they missed checking land records for so many years when the panchayat land was encroached upon by Jadeja.

Another aspect under investigation is that the panchayat served notice on only the house built by Jadeja and not the six shops which were built on the land.

Jadeja was arrested May 31 this year with his wife Neetu in Ahmedabad just when they were trying to flee the city with Rs.1.9 crore (Rs.19 million). He is accused of duping thousands of people in Gujarat, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.
