Markets close on a low, Sensex down 173 points

Mumbai : Indian equities markets closed in the red Friday, with a key index falling steadily post-noon to end trade 173 points below its last closing figure.

The benchmark index of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), Sensex, which opened at 15,446.82 points, fell 173.53 points or 1.13 percent at 15,237.94 points (provisional).

The Sensex hit an intra-day high of 15,600.3 points and a low of 15,174.28 points.

Like Sensex, the S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) too closed in the red, shedding 1.17 percent to close at 4,583.4 points.

The broader market indices also closed in the negative terrain, with the BSE midcap index ending 2.1 percent lower, while the BSE smallcap index was 2.21 percent down.
