Human Resources Minister S. Subramaniam Wednesday thanked Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Najib Tun Razak for considering the Malaysian Indian Congress’s request for additional allocation of $13.54 million under the second stimulus package.

Subramaniam, who is also the MIC secretary-general, said in the first economic stimulus package, the government had allocated RM50 million for Tamil schools, while RM30 million was approved by the finance ministry before the March 8 general election.

“In total, we now have RM130 million ($35.21 million) to be spent on rebuilding Tamil schools,” The Star newspaper quoted him as saying.

A bulk of the two million-plus ethnic Indians in Malaysia are Tamils who came here during the British era.
