Mumbai: The key accused in the Naroda Gam and Naroda Patia Muslims’ massacre Maya Kodnani has to face yet another charge of destroying evidences.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) appointed by the Supreme Court to probe ten major cases of Gujarat riots 2002 including Godhra train carnage, charged the former Modi cabinet minister Kodnani under Indian Panel Code (IPC) Section 201 which relates to the offence of destruction of evidences.
Kodnani was already facing charges of murder, attempt to murder, instigating riots and loot against her.
One of the SIT officials has been quoted as saying that Kodnani and other co-accused after committing the crime at Naroda Gam and Naroda Patia villages had tried to burn the bodies and the houses; a move apparently meant to destroy evidences so that their involvement cannot be established.
The official reportedly claimed to have enough proofs against Kodnani in the shape of statements from the witnesses and a CD of mobile call details which establishes her presence at the spot and her constant touch with the other accused.
On February 28, 2002 a mob allegedly led by then BJP MLA Maya Kodnani, VHP leader Jaydeep Patel and other Hindu leaders During 2002 Gujarat riots, attacked Naroda Gam and Naroda Patia villages and killed total 106 Muslims.
The SIT in the additional chargesheet it filed in both Naroda Gam and Naroda Patia cases had alleged Kodnani of having led the mob, distributed swords among them, persuaded them to commit the crime and fired from her own pistol.
