Bihar legislator receives SMS demanding money

By IANS,

Patna : The police in Bihar are investigating a complaint by a ruling Janata Dal (United) legislator that unidentified men have demanded Rs.1 crore (Rs.10 million) from him.

Manoj Yadav, a JD-U legislator of Banka district, around 150 km from state capital Patna, lodged a first information report (FIR) Sunday saying that an unidentified man sent him an SMS demanding Rs.1 crore.

“I received an SMS in Hindi late Saturday in which the sender demanded Rs.1 crore as extortion,” Yadav said.

The text message also said: “You will be killed if you fail to pay the money.”

In Bihar, this is the first case of a legislator receiving an SMS with an illegal demand for money.

To the contrary, in the past several legislators, particularly criminals-turned-politicians, have been charged with extorting money from businessman, professionals and others.
