New Delhi: Union Home Minister P Chidambaram will address the massive gathering of Deobandi clerics descending in Deoband in Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh from across the country under the banner of Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind. About 10,000 clerics, besides five lakh followers of Jamiat, are attending the 3-day conference starting from November 1.
Chidambaram will address the gathering on November 3. Jamiat have invited Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi to the conference. Media reports say that they may not visit Deoband. Instead, Home Minister will address the gathering.
Jamiat and Darul Uloom Deoband have more than once and strongly condemned terrorism and campaigns to implicate Islam or Deoband for terror attacks. Chidambaram assumed as Home Minister soon after the last year’s Mumbai terror attacks. His address to Deoband clerics will be first as Home Minister.
