Orissa burns as mercury crosses 45 degrees

Bhubaneswar: There was no respite in sight for the residents of Orissa as mercury crossed 45 degrees celsius in some of its towns Tuesday, the weatherman said.

The highest — 45.5 degrees Celsius temperature was recorded at Hirakud town in the district of Sambalpur, some 320 km from here, a Met department official said.

The western town of Jharsuguda was the second hottest place recording 45.3 degrees Celsius, he said, adding that high temperature was also recorded at several other places.

The other places with high temperatures were Sambalpur (45.0) Bolangir (44.8) and Sundergarh (44.8).

The state capital Bhubaneswar and its nearby Cuttack town, however, were relatively cooler, recording maximum temperatures of 40.0 and 40.1 degrees Celsius respectively.

The heat wave condition would prevail over some parts of the state during next 24 hours, the official said.
