A ComRes poll for The Independent showed that backing for Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg’s party has fallen to just 16 percent, its lowest level since before the general election in May.

It also found that almost three-quarters of the public says it does not know what the Lib Dems stand for any longer since the centre-left-party entered a pact with the centre-right Tories. Fewer than two thirds of people who voted Lib-Dem would do so again.

The poll confirmed that Labour was slowly regaining support since losing the election, gaining two points to 33%, while support for the Tories was down one point to 39%.

Former Lib Dem MP Sandra Gidley said that her big concern was that voters see the government as being Conservative that it has “difficult to see where the Liberal Democrats have had an influence.”

Since the election, Britain’s third party has faced criticism for supporting policies, including government spending cuts, which it opposed in its manifesto.
