“We respect Mesut’s wish to take the next step in his career,” Bremen manager Klaus Allofs said in a statement.

The north German club did not specify Oezil’s transfer fee but it is believed to hover around 15 million euros.

Bremen were pushing for the deal during the summer transfer window as Oezil would have been free to move for without a transfer fee.

The 21-year-old player of Turkish origin, joined Bremen from Schalke 04 in January 2008.

Oezil made headlines for his stunning performance at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
