New Delhi : Two men have been arrested in the capital for duping over 100 people after promising them of providing domestic maids, caretakers, nannies and nurses through their fake placement agency, police said Tuesday.
Salim Turkey, 35, and Bahuran Kumar, 25, were arrested from South Delhi Monday. They were pickeed up on the complaint of retired government officer Jagdish Narayan, who resides in Lajpat Nagar. Raids were on to catch their accomplices Ashok and Himani.
Narayan, who was looking for a domestic maid, contacted the Jay Placement Agency after reading a pamphlet.
“The accused promised him of making available a domestic maid for a sum of Rs.10,000 as registration charges and salary of Rs.1,800 per month. Instead of the complainant visiting their office, the accused offered to provide service at their house,” said a police officer.
“Turkey and Kumar visited Narayan’s home and introduced a woman to the family. The accused filled up the necessary forms and took Rs.10,000 from them. After that the accused disappeared. Narayan later found that the address of the placement agency given in the pamphlet was fake,” the officer added.
The police said in spite of repeated raids at various hideouts in the national capital region, the accused managed to evade their arrests. They changed their hideouts and contact numbers for more than 50 times in the past two months.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (south Delhi) H.G.S. Dhalilwal said they cheated over 100 people in the national capital region.
“They portrayed themselves as an authorised agent mentioning their office address, registration number and mobile numbers to gain the confidence of innocent people. Once they fixed up the appointment, they used to visit the residence with other gang members, including the maid servant to be provided to the customer,” he said.
The police said the girl would run away from the customer’s house within a day or two, sometimes even by drugging or robbing the inmates. After that, they would change their mobile numbers as well as handsets and even their residence.
