Lucknow : A man wanted in nearly 20 criminal cases was killed in a gunfight with police in Ghazipur district of Uttar Pradesh, while two of his aides managed to escape, an official said Thursday.

Suresh Yadav, 30, who had charges of murder, abduction, loot and other heinous crimes against him, was killed late Wednesday in Baresar town in Ghazipur, around 300 km from Lucknow.

“It was nearly after an hour of gunfight that we managed to shoot him (Suresh) dead. However, his two aides escaped on a motorbike,” Inspector M.P. Singh told reporters in Ghazipur.

“The most recent of the crimes committed by Suresh was the murder of an administrative officer of Life Insurance Corporation (LIC). Suresh killed the officer Jan 20 after he refused to pay protection money,” he added.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of police and special operation group (SOG) intercepted three men who were on a motorbike. The three did not stop and started firing at the police team. Police retaliated and Suresh was killed in the gunfight.

“Efforts are on to nab the two aides,” Singh said.

Police claimed to have have seized a pistol and a police service revolver from Suresh.

According to police, Suresh used to operate in eastern regions of Uttar Pradesh and had links with criminals of Bihar, Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh, who used to hire him for committing crimes.
