Indian Mujahideen declared a terrorist organisation

By TCN News,

New Delhi: Indian Mujahideen, a shadowy terror group as its headquarters or offices are yet to be found, has been declared a terrorist organization by the Government of India. According to a Central Government release, government has issued an order adding Indian Mujahideen, all its formations and front organizations to the list of terror groups.

The Schedule to the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 contains the list of terrorist organizations. The list, available on the website of the Home Ministry, has 34 such organizations. Indian Mujahideen will be the 35th. The list includes United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA), People’s Liberation Army (PLA), Manipur People’s Liberation Front, Babbar Khalsa International, Khalistan Commando Force, Lashkar-E-Taiba/Pasban-E-Ahle Hadis, Jaish-E-Mohammed/Tahrik-E-Furqa, Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist), Dukhtaran-E-Millat (DEM) and Students Islamic Movement Of India.

Indian Mujahideen was introduced to the country through some emails in which it warned of/claimed for some terror blasts minutes before the actual blasts. The group is blamed for Jaipur, Ahmedabad and Delhi serial blasts. Scores of Muslim youths have been arrested as members of Indian Mujahideen in connection with the blasts. However, after the arrest of Abhinav Bharat members (Col Purohit, Pragya Thakur) in September 29, 2008 Malegaon blasts, blasts in the country have almost stopped, and so the name of Indian Mujahideen. It is noteworthy that all major serial blasts in the country – Jaipur, Ahmedabad and Delhi – took place before September 29, 2008.

Some other members of Abhinav Bharat have recently been found involved in Ajmer Dargah blasts and Makkah Masjid blasts also. However, it is difficult to say if Abhinav Bharat, in the eyes of the government, fulfills the criteria of a terror group. That’s why, perhaps, the government is not appearing to consider ban on the Nagpur-based group. Nagpur is the headquarters of RSS.
