Sopore: Curfew continue, protests in Baramulla

Srinagar: Curfew continued to remain imposed in Sopore town, of north Kashmir on Sunday, for the third consecutive day. Heavy contingents of police and paramilitary troopers had been deployed in various localities of the town and the armoured vehicles and troopers were seen patrolling the deserted streets. Protest strike was observed in Baramulla town, as well.

While curfew continue in Sopore town of north Kashmir on Sunday was “peaceful” and no untoward incident was reported from any part of the town, police said.

The town yesterday witnessed clashes between agitated youth and law enforcing agencies at several places despite curfew.

Curfew was imposed in Sopore after two persons Shakeel Ahmad Ganai and Firdous Ahmad Kakroo were allegedly killed in the CRPF firing in town on Friday.

Meanwhile, youths clashed with security forces in Baramulla town forcing closure of shops and suspension of vehicular traffic, officials said.

The Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (M), Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, has once again urged people to reach Sopor tomorrow to express solidarity with the martyrs.

“Make Sopor Chalo programme a success to demonstrate unwavering association with the freedom movement,” Mirwaiz said in a statement. A statement issued after the meeting.

Call for the march “Sopor Chalo” has been given by the APHC Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq after the killing of two civilians by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on Friday.
