Mumbai : Gautam Gambhir(96 not out) and MS Dhoni (59 not out) took India closer to the Sri Lanka’s 275-run target in the World Cup final at the Wankhede here Saturday.Gambhir and Dhoni had shared an unbeaten 117-run stand by the end of the 40th over with the score at 221 for three.
The left-hand batsman and the captain got together after Virat Kohli’s dismissal in the 22nd over with the score at 114 for three.
Gambhir also forged 83-run stand with Kohli to bring India in contention after the early loss of Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar.
Sri Lanka earlier were in full control upfront after fast bowler Lasith Malinga brought an abrupt end to Tendulkar’s World Cup campaign by sending him back for just 18 runs with the score at 31 for two in 6.1 overs.
Tendulkar, who was still waiting for his 100th international century, edged a Malinga delivery to wicketkeeper Kumar Sangakkara to stun the capacity crowd into silence.
India lost Sehwag in the first over.
