Slum population may reach 10 crore by the end of 2011

New Delhi: The slum population in the country is expected to touch the mark of 10 crore by the end of 2011. As per estimates of the Committee set up by Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, the urban slum population will be 93.06 million by 2011, an increase of 22% from 2001.

As per the committee, the slum population in the country (in 2001) was 75.26 million, that was 26.31 % of the urban population of the country. But by the end of 2011, the slum population will reach 93.06 million.

Under the Basic Services for the Urban Poor (BSUP) and the Integrated Housing and Slum Development Programme (IHSDP), components of Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), 9, 19,728 dwelling units have been sanctioned for urban poor during last four years.
