Mumbai : Striking work for the first time in their 120-year history, Mumbai’s famed dabbawalas will Friday join protests in support of activist Anna Hazare in his fight for a strong Lokpal bill.
“We are breaking our 120-year-old tradition by not providing tiffins tomorrow (Friday). This is the least we can do to support Annaji who has been fasting for over 50 hours,” Nutan Dabbalwala Trust secretary Kiran Gavande told IANS.
Over 5,000 dabbawals will also bring out a rally from Churchgate station to Azad Maidan in south Mumbai Friday.
“I am sure our customers will agree with us and not take us to task for not delivering tiffins to them,” Gavande said.
The dabbawalas, who provide lunch to over 200,000 customers every day, are the subject of many management case studies. The international media has written about them extensively.
“We are not for or against any political party. But we cannot deny the fact that corruption is at its peak today,” Gavande said.
“It is the corruption that we are fighting, not any party,” he added.
