Ranchi : Support for activist Anna Hazare’s hunger strike is building up across Jharkhand, a state hit by one corruption scam after another in recent times.
“Anna Hazare is the hope for the people of Jharkhand. His movement may make an impact on Jharkhand,” Bharti Kashyap, a doctor, told IANS.
It is a view widely expressed here in Ranchi, the state capital, and other towns.
Lawyers boycotted courts here and in other districts Friday and Saturday in support of Hazare, whose hunger strike for a strong Lokpal Bill entered the sixth day Sunday.
School and college students have taken out rallies. Some children here are attending schools wearing Gandhi caps.
Prisoners in the Ranchi fasted Friday in solidarity.
Jharkhand Human Resources Development Minister Baijnath Ram Saturday even announced that Hazare’s campaign against corruption would be included in school syllabus.
“Anna is an inspiration for those opposed to corruption,” said lawyer Rajiv Kumar.
The business community is also backing Hazare. Traders closed their shops Thursday to support of the Gandhian activist.
People say they are sick and tired of the corruption they encounter every day in the state.
“In Jharkhand corruption is at its peak. No work takes place without bribery,” complained Sharad Poddar, a member of the Jharkhand Small Scale Industries Association.
