3,554 workers died in accidents

New Delhi : A total of 3,554 workers died in accidents in the industries and manufacturing sectors in 2007-09, with Gujarat and Maharashtra accounting for most deaths, parliament was told Wednesday.

While 1,016 workers were killed in 2007, the next two years accounted for 1,223 and 1,315 deaths, Minister of Labour and Employment Mallikarjun Khagre told the Rajya Sabha.

The largest number of 818 deaths took place in the manufacture of metals followed by chemical and chemical products (447), food products and beverages (400) and non-metallic mineral products (319).

Gujarat accounted for 566 deaths, Maharashtra 561, Andhra Pradesh 484 and Orissa 285 deaths.
