The flood gates of the dam have not yet been opened for discharge of water, he said, adding that the reservoir, built on the Sutlej river, can hold water up to the level of 1,680 feet.

The spokesman said that the Beas and the Sutlej rivers that pass through Punjab witnessed increased discharge upstream.

The government last week asked district authorities downstream of the Beas and the Sutlej rivers to be prepared with flood control measures if the discharge from Bhakra and Pong dams, located in neighbouring Himachal Pradesh, increased.

The dams are built along the Punjab-Himachal border and are managed by the Bhakra Beas Management Board.
