New Delhi: The Congress Monday said the government had bent over backwards on the opposition’s demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the 2G spectrum controversy so that parliament could function smoothly.
Congress spokesman Abhishek Manu Singhvi said the government’s move should be seen in the context of the sensitivities of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and people of the country who wanted the parliament to function.
Asked the reasons for the government agreeing to a JPC when it had stoutly opposed it earlier resulting in a stalemate and a washout of the winter session, Singhvi said the question should be posed to those who obstinately insisted on forming the parliamentary committee.
The UPA government showed flexibility and “bent over backwards” to ensure that parliament functions, he said.
“We offered everything to make parliament function,” he added.
Singhvi, however, added that no formal move had yet been made on constituting the JPC.
Singhvi said the party had all along said that several policy initiatives were underway in the 2G spectrum controversy but the opposition insisted on JPC.
