Berlin strongly condemns lethal security clampdown in Libya

Berlin : The German government here on Monday ‘condemned in the strongest possible terms’ Libya’s brutal clampdown on pro-democrcacy protests.

Talking to the press in Berlin, a spokesman for Chancellor Angela Merkel said she was ‘shocked over the great brutality’ displayed by Libyan security forces.

‘Grant freedom of assembly for all those who are demonstrating peacefully and seek dialogue with the population,’ said chancellery spokesperson Steffen Seibert.

Hundreds of people are believed to have been killed in protests in cities across Libya over the past days.

Meanwhile, the German foreign ministry has issued a travel warning for Libya which is witnessing its worst unrest in 42 years.

In other related news, European Union foreign ministers were discussing prospects for imposing sanctions against Libya over its deadly security crackdown.
