Berlin : German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle is planning to visit Egypt ‘in the near future,’ an official said here on Monday.
Addressing media representatives in the German capital, foreign ministry spokesman Andreas Peschke said there were plans for such a trip whereby Westerwelle would be one of the first western leaders to visit Egypt since the forced resignation of deposed president Hosni Mubarak.
A close ally of the Mubarak regime, Germany, was reluctant to openly back Egypt’s freedom movement.
Mubarak had received billions of euros in development aid from Germany during his 30-year rule, mainly because of his staunch pro-Zionist regime stance.
