New Delhi : The number of custodial deaths of those remanded to police by courts has decreased from 57 in 2007 to 25 in 2009, reveals data by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

However, custodial deaths of people not remanded to police by a court only showed a slight dip. From 61 such cases in 2007 and 2008, the figure came down only by two with 59 people dying in 2009.

The various reasons for custodial deaths included accidents, riots and suicides. The number of those who died during hospitalisation and treatment came down from 38 in 2007 to nine in 2009.

There was only a single case of custodial rape in 2007, none the following year and two in 2009.
