Congress core group to discuss security

By IANS,

New Delhi : The Congress core group will meet later Friday evening to discuss the security situation in the country in the aftermath of Wednesday’s attacks in Mumbai and other current political issues, party sources said.

Though the agenda for the meeting of the core group — a top team of the party which includes Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and key ministers and party leaders — is not usually divulged, the “security situation in the country will be naturally the main topic”, a party leader told IANS on condition of anonymity.

At least 17 people were killed and 131 others injured in serial bomb blasts in three busy localities in Mumbai Wednesday evening. Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi visited the metropolis Thursday and met many of the injured and the families of those killed.

Congress leaders feel the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is trying to make political capital out of the Mumbai attack. Party spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi had vehemently criticised senior BJP leader L.K. Advani’s statement at the blast site that the attack happened because of the “wrong policies” adopted by the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.

Besides security, the core group will discuss the situation following the reshuffle of the 25-month-old UPA II government, party sources said.

The Telangana agitation, which has led to the resignation of over 100 Congress MPs and MLAs of the region in Andhra Pradesh, is another topic which may come up, they added.
