New Delhi : Additional foodgrain storage capacity of about 152 lakh tonnes would be created in 19 states, the ministry of consumer affairs, food and public distribution said Friday.
“Out of this (152 lakh tonnes), a capacity of 72.65 lakh tonnes has been finalised for creation by private entrepreneurs, central warehousing corporation (CWC) and state warehousing corporations (SWCs),” the ministry said in a statement.
The finalisation of creation of the rest of the capacity would be completed soon, it said.
According to the statement, the government has approved work by private investors for building 53.32 lakh tonnes capacity. The CWC will build 5.31 lakh tonnes capacity and SWCs will add 15.01 lakh tonnes capacity.
The ministry said plans were ready for expanding storage capacity in the northeast. A capacity of about 5.4 lakh tonnes would be set up at a cost of Rs.568 crore.
