“There are a lot of problems in the state. There is no money. The previous Left Front government has pushed the state towards a debt of Rs.2 lakh crore. The economy of Bengal has been ruined by the Left Front,” said Banerjee while addressing her first major political rally after coming to power in the state in May.

Banerjee was speaking at the Martyrs’ Day programme of Trinamool Congress which is observed every year to commemorate the death of 13 Congress activists in police firing in 1993 during a Writers’ Buildings blockade agitation.

The Brigade Parade Ground rally, which saw a mammoth turnout, was also declared as the party’s victory rally for having ended the Left’s 34 year rule.

“I have repeatedly asked for central assistance to pull out the state from this financial mess. I have requested them for an economic package… I have also informed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh about the problem. He has promised me that he will help us out,” said Banerjee.
