10 crorepatis and 14 with criminal charges in Kerala government

Thiruvananthapuram: In the 20-member UDF government, 10 ministers are crorepatis, as per the National Election Watch and Myneta.info (http://myneta.info/kerala2011/index.php?action=show_winners&sort=default). And all but six ministers have pending criminal charges against them.

While Shibu Baby John, Minister of Labour, is the richest with declared assets of more than Rs 8 crores, Education Minister PK Abdurabb and Health Minister Adoor Prakash are next with assets of more than Rs 4 crores. Minister of Scheduled Tribes Welfare PK Jayalakshmi has the lowest assets declared – just more than Rs 2 lakhs. The MLA from Mananthavady is also the lone female member of the government and UDF.

In the 140-member Assembly, 35 MLAs are crorepatis i.e. 25%. Thomas Chandy, MLA of Kuttanad and leader of NCP, is the richest in the Assembly with total assets declared of more than 45 crores. Muslim League’s Manjalamkuzhi Ali, MLA of Perinthalmanna, is second with more than 14 crores and Congress’s K Muraleedharan is third with more than 10 crores.

The MLA with lowest assets declared is CPI (M)’s KV Abdul Khader, who won from Guruvayur and was the chairman of the Waqf Board in the last LDF government, with just above Rs 2 lakhs. CF Thomas, Kerala Congress (M)’s MLA in Changanassery, also has declared assets worth just above Rs 2.5 lakhs.

Out of the total 140 MLAs analysed, 48% i.e. 67 MLAs have pending criminal charges against them. And 12 of them have serious IPC charges like attempt to murder, attempt to commit culpable homicide etc. All the major parties have MLAs with pending criminal charges against them. The Congress has 23 MLAs with pending criminal charges out of its total of 38 MLAs. The CPI (M) has 21 out of 45, Muslim League has 8 out of 20 and the CPI has 5 out of 13 MLAs.

Dr MK Muneer, Minister of Panchayat and Social Welfare, tops other ministers in the matter of most number of pending criminal charges. There are 14 pending charges against him, as per records of the National Election Watch. There are two pending cases against Shibu Baby John, Minister of Labour. All other ministers, but for PK Jayalakshmi, AP Anil Kumar, PK Abdurabb, Aryadan Muhammed, PK Kunjalikkutty and PJ Joseph, have one criminal charge pending against them.
