Islamabad : The Peshawar blasts – the latest in a long series of such attacks – show the government has again failed in its duty to protect the lives of common citizens, a Pakistani paper said Monday, and urged authorities to devise a “new approach” to tackle the menace of terrorism.
“The blasts in a market in Peshawar left at least 34 people killed and about 100 injured. Several shops in the vicinity were destroyed and damage caused to buildings in the area. Such attacks have been taking place in our country regularly in which countless people have been killed and great damage caused,” an editorial in the Urdu daily Jang said.
The paper said it had been urging the government and the “institutions and agencies responsible for the security of the country and safety of the people to look at the underlying causes and reasons behind the blasts, in order to prevent their recurrence”.
Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa has been a special target for such attacks, the editorial said, adding that the “experience until now is clear proof now that traditional methods are not successful in deterring such attacks”.
“It is necessary that the federal and provincial authorities now sit and devise some new ways to protect the common people and their property from the menace of such blasts. This is the need of the hour,” the paper added.
At least 34 people, including a journalist, were killed and 80 others injured when two bombs were detonated near the offices of media organizations at a supermarket in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province late Saturday night.
