Airtel Bangladesh crosses five million subscriber-mark

New Delhi : Telecom giant Bharti Airtel Saturday said its Bangladesh operations — Airtel Bangladesh — has crossed the five million subscriber-mark.

The telcom operator which has operations in 19 countries across Asia and Africa acquired 70 percent stake in Warid Telecom in January 2010 and launched brand Airtel in Bangladesh in December 2010.

“We dedicate this achievement to our customers, partners and other key stakeholders for their constant support. This milestone reiterates the strong growth being experienced by the telecom sector in Bangladesh and we at Airtel are delighted to be at the forefront of this revolution,” said Atul Bindal, president, mobile services, Bharti Airtel.

Airtel Bangladesh also announced addition of 160 new towns to its network spread across 2,100 towns across the country.

With 2,220 BTS (base transceiver station) sites currently present in Bangladesh, Airtel plans to extend its coverage to reach 72 percent of the country’s population by December 2011.

The company also plans to strengthen the presence of its support services for customers with a target of setting up 600 additional service centres in Bangladesh by March 2012.
