Pakistan beefs up security after Christian minister’s assasination

Islamabad : Pakistani government has beefed up security for ministers after assassination of a minister in capital Islamabad Wednesday, officials said.

Taliban militants said in a leaflet that they shot dead Minister for Minorities, Shahbaz Bhatti, as he was campaigning for changes in blasphemy law.

The gunmen fled in a car and the police have failed to arrest any of the suspects.

In view of prevailing law and order situation, particularly in the backdrop of tragic assassination of Bhatti, the Interior Minister, Rehman Malik presided over a high level meeting and directed the police to enhance security for all ministers.

The police were asked to provide two additional personnel from Police and two personnel from another force “Frontier Constabulary”, an Interior Ministry statement said.

The Islamabad should be divided into four zones, and combing operation should be conducted immediately against the elements of proscribed organizations, miscreants, criminal, illegal settlers and illegal Afghans in the suburbs of Islamabad.

The Islamabad police have been instructed to review the security plan of Islamabad and all out efforts should be made to improve the security environment of the federal capital.

The Chief Commissioner and Inspector General Police have been directed to submit initial inquiry report of the incident to the Ministry of Interior within next 48 hours.
