According to figures cited in Sunday’s traffic police bulletin, 58 people died and 555 were injured in the 1,046 accidents that occurred on the country’s roads Saturday alone.

This was in addition to the 37 people who died and 394 who were injured in over 960 accidents that occurred Friday.

In the southern state of Santa Caterina, 25 people were killed in a head-on collision between a bus and a truck Saturday.

Security forces Saturday conducted nearly 5,800 alcohol sobriety tests, of which 190 came back positive. As many as 75 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

During the carnival, the number of people travelling on roads to and from the festivities increases every year.
