There has been many attacks by protesters on state security agencies based on rumours that security officers were trying to destroy the security archives.

Demonstrators got hold of some classified documents, which might shed light on the latest events in the country, media reports said.

“These documents contain names and files, which could jeopardise the security of the country and the people,” the military council – which is ruling the country after president Hosni Mubarak stepped down Feb 11 – said on its Facebook page.

According to reports, Egyptians say security officers took advantage of their vast powers to control people’s lives, including banning or allowing foreign trips, or interfering with business and personal relationships.

After Mubarak was ousted, demonstrators demanded that the state security service be abolished as an element of the past.
