Lucknow: Taking a serious note of Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi’s unannounced visits to Uttar Pradesh, the Mayawati government Thursday raised critical security issues.
Gandhi took the state machinery by surprise when he landed in a chartered aircraft at Babatpur airport in Varanasi Tuesday. Since then he has been visiting villages in and around Varanasi, Bhadohi, Mirzapur and Jaunpur.
“Despite our repeated attempts to draw your attention to the unannounced visits to different parts of the state by Mr. Rahul Gandhi, no action has been initiated on your part to give us prior information about his visits to the state,” said a letter sent Thursday by the state government to the union home ministry.
The letter sought to point out how important it was for any state government to ensure security for a Special Protection Group-protected leader like Rahul Gandhi.
“After all, it is the responsibility of the state government to make necessary security arrangements for anyone who is entitled to SPG cover,” said an official spokesman here.
“This is the umpteenth time that the state government has sent such a letter, but the union home ministry does not even care to send a reply,” he added.
