The demonstrators were later released on the condition that they would wrap up the agitation and remove the road blockades.

“Thousands had gathered at several places on National Highway No.6 to support the demands of cotton farmers. We had blocked traffic at many places, including Dhuliya, Jalgaon and Aurangabad,” said Mahajan.

Mahajan had earlier launched an indefinite hunger strike to support the farmers’ demand and continued it for 10 days. He ended his hunger strike last week after assurance from the state government that the demand would be considered.

“Policemen have appealed to us that thousands of others are inconvenienced due to the ‘rasta roko’ agitation and we should consider their request,” Mahajan said.

“We will remove the traffic blockades later Monday as our intention was just to register our protest and not to inconvenience commoners,” he added.
