Pakistan wants early warning system for disasters

Islamabad : Pakistan has asked the UN for an early warning system for natural disasters to reduce damages.

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani Thursday asked the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative for Disaster Risk Reduction Margareta Wahistrom for the provision of early warning system to Pakistan to pre-empt the damages of natural disasters.

He said it would help the government to reduce loss of human lives, property and infrastructure, reported Associated Press of Pakistan.

Gilani welcomed the UN’s assistance for better preparedness to face disasters.

Wahistrom said the UN was ready to impart training to officials in Pakistan so that they can play an effective role in case of natural calamity.

She told Gilani that the UN had identified 900 cities in the world of which 35 are from Pakistan for launching projects to make them better prepared for disaster risk reduction.
