Bengaluru blast case: Trial procedures postponed to September 24

By TCN News,

Bengaluru: The trial procedures of the Bengaluru blast case has been postponed to September 24. PDP chief Abdunnasir Maudany (31st accused) and others were directly produced in the court when the case was considered yesterday, unlike earlier times when they were presented via video conferencing.

The case was postponed as some accused have not yet got consuls to represent them. The court had directed to arrange lawyers for them through the legal aid cell of the government, but that also could not be done.

Prime accused Thadiyantavide Naseer and 19th accused Shafas, who were in Kannur Central Jail in Kerala under punishment in the Kozhikode twin blasts case, were also presented in the court. Two others accused – Sainudheen and Sharafudheen – who are presently in a Gujarat jail in connection with the Ahmedabad blasts were produced via video conferencing.

The court acknowledged the chargesheet which was re-submitted by the investigating team after going through it again. Adv Vasanth H Vaidya was present for Maudany.

The trial proceedings began early in April in the court set up inside the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison outside the Bengaluru city where the accused are presently in. The trial was postponed several times as all accused could not get consuls.

One person was killed and around 20 others injured when serial blasts rocked Bengaluru city on July 25, 2008. Nine cases have been registered by the Karnataka police and 32 persons have been accused in the case. Among the accused, only 19 are in the Karnataka jail and according to police reports four others have been killed in an encounter in the Kashmir valley. Nine accused including foreigners and five Keralites are yet to be caught. The rest are in jails in other states like Kerala and Gujarat, in connection with terror cases in the states such as the Kozhikode twin blasts, Kalamassery bus-burning case, Ahmedabad blasts etc. There are a total of 280 witnesses also in the case.

Maudany was arrested by the Karnataka police from Kerala on August 17, 2010, when he was on his way to surrender in court. He was under police custody for 10 days, after which he was remanded to judicial custody which has been extended since. His bail plea was rejected by the Karnataka High Court and the Supreme Court division bench was divided on the verdict.
