Ankara : Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said Friday though the UN did not receive any confirmed report of the Syrian government preparing to use chemical weapons, it would be “outrageous crime” if it did so.
“But if it is the case, it would be an outrageous crime in the name of humanity,” Xinhua quoted the UN chief as saying in Turkey where he arrived Friday to hold talks with the country’s officials on war-ravaged Syria and visit Syrian refugees who fled the violence in their country.
“Recently we have been receiving alarming news that the Syrian government may be preparing to use chemical weapons. I wrote a letter to (Syrian President Bashar) al-Assad, asking not to use them,” Ban said.
He also called on the international community and all fighting sides in Syria to stop violence immediately, asserting only a political solution could bring peace to the region.
