New Delhi: Two weeks after clashes at a shrine in Jor Bagh area of south Delhi left at least 25 people injured, police Monday opened a disputed gate at the site. Around 2,000 Shia Muslims also courted arrest, but were later released, police said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Chhaya Sharma said police opened the second gate of the Shah-e-Mardan dargah.

The gate was closed as per Delhi High Court orders after complaints by nearby residents.

Sharma added that around 2,000 Shia Muslims belonging to the Anjuman-E-Haideri Council courted arrest at the site, but were later released.

“The members of the council gathered at the shrine with their three demands. First, to free the nine people who were arrested Jan 15, the second related to the disputed land issue and the third was to open the gate,” added Sharma.

The police had opened the gate earlier in the day, the officer said.

On Jan 15, at least 25 people, including a woman and some police officers, were injured in clashes between the police and Shia Muslims who wanted to enter the shrine from the second gate during a religious procession.
