Curfew was imposed in Phulbari, Rajabala, Bhaitbari, Singhimari and other adjoining areas May 8 to prevent communal clashes between Garos and Muslims after some people circulated text messages with communal content.

During the following days, depending upon the improvement in the situation, relaxation was afforded for varying durations.

“Curfew has been totally lifted from the plain belt areas of the district after the situation returned to normal,” West Garo Hills district Deputy Commissioner Pravin Bakshi told IANS.

However, section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code, banning unlawful assembly and the carrying of lethal weapons, would continue to be in force as a precautionary measure.
