Nepal gets new army chief

Kathmandu : Acting Nepal Army chief Lt. Gen. Gaurav Shumsher Rana Sunday formally took over as chief following compulsory retirement of outgoing army chief Chhatra Man Singh Gurung.

Rana was conferred the insignia of chief of the army staff by President Ram Baran Yadav, said the Nepal Army’s directorate of public relations, reported Xinhua.

Rana, a alumnus from Lawrence School, Sanawar in India’s Himachal Pradesh state, has served the Nepal Army for 39 years. He had also completed the Officers’ Cadet Course from the Royal Military Academy in Britain’s Sandhurst.

Rana joined the Army in November 1970. He is the son of Aditya Shumsher Rana, a former major general of the Nepal Army, and the great-grandson of former prime minister Chandra Shumsher Rana, who ruled the country for 30 years between 1901 and 1930.
