Srinagar : Thirty-three people caught in flash floods were rescued after a seven-hour operation in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district Sunday, an official said.
Aamir Ali, incharge of the disaster management at the provincial headquarters, told IANS: “Thirty-three people, including men, women and children of nomadic families, were trapped in flash floods after they set up camp for the night in a forest in Shopian district Saturday.”
“Flash floods marooned the people along with their horses, sheep and goats,” he said.
He said the rescue operation was started in the morning by troops of 62 Rashtriya Rifles, police, district administration, fire department and personnel of emergency services.
“After seven hours of coordinated rescue operation all the marooned persons, along with their livestock, were rescued,” the officer told IANS.
Incessant rains over the last two days have swollen most of the rivers and streams in the area.
Weather office has, however, forecast improvement in the weather from Monday onwards.
