New Delhi: A group of faculty member of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has come out in support of their former Vice-chancellor Prof. Mushirul Hasan for what they called “premeditated intimidation campaign” against Hasan.
Prof. Hasan who recently joined JMI after his stint at National Archives ended in June alleged that he was harassed by the dean.
Full statement from the academics
We, the undersigned faculty members of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), unequivocally condemn the premeditated intimidation campaign launched against Professor Mushirul Hasan, eminent historian and former Vice-chancellor of JMI. The allegations against Professor Hasan, as he has already clarified, are concocted, baseless and above all, trivial. Instead of acknowledging his distinguished services to the academic development of the university he was willfully harassed. Adverse conditions were deliberately created compelling him to apply for Voluntary Retirement from the Services (VRS). This retrograde culture of vindictiveness must be put to rest – failing which the academic growth of the university may be retarded beyond repair. An atmosphere of suspicion, denunciation and targeted hounding is not conducive to intellectual pursuits or the overall academic health of the university. We sincerely hope that the University administration will revoke its acceptance of Prof. Mushirul Hasan’s VRS. We also solicit the kind intervention of the Visitor of the University, Honorable President of India, in the matter under reference.
