Dhaka : Students clashed with police in Bangladesh’s Barisal Wednesday, leaving 25 people injured.
The clashes involved the students of the Institute of Health and Technology (IHT) in Barisal and police arrested 14 students after they blocked the road near the Barisal Medical College and Hospital to press for their demands, bdnews24.com reported.
The injured have been admitted to the Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College.
Sonia Akhter, one of the students injured in the police action, said they were holding peaceful protests.
The students’ demands include the formation of a Bangladesh diploma medical education board to replace the Paramedical Education Board, the creation of new posts in line with the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines, and eradication of legal complexities in job appointments, among others.
An enraged student, Tanni Afroz, said that policemen beat up female students.
“This is an abuse on women,” she said, seeking punishment for the personnel concerned.
Deputy Police Commissioner Syed Golam Rauf, on the other hand, said that demands were not met by street blockades.
“One must go to the appropriate authorities,” he said.
